about

"A Language of my own" is a trio recording of the sketches made originally for a major orchestral piece entitled "On Rosenhill", which has been recorded and will be released sometime in 2019.
The trio music on this album is written with Simon Toldam and Chris Speed's unique sound in mind. Both musicians have been a part of my "musical family" for more than a decade and their musical voices are here presented in a very honest and authentic way by the great Norwegian sound engineer Jan Erik Kongshaug. The music was recorded in the Rainbow studio in Oslo over two days in September 2016.
Having worked on a Requiem for a large Jazz orchestra with a cathedral choir and several soloists from 2012 to 2015, it was a great pleasure composing these new pieces for the trio and letting them serve as sketches for larger ensemble pieces. Most of the sketches are written using the trumpet while sitting on a veranda in the concrete low rise block area where I was born in 1968.
Rosenhill (Rosenhøj) in Viby Jutland is where I grew up, a suburb of Aarhus, the second largest city in Denmark.
Rosenhill is now a mixed neighbourhood, where its inhabitants have a variety of different cultural backgrounds.
In the summer of 2016 my wife and I borrowed a flat from a friend in Rosenhill, essentially moving back into my childhood world and I became suddenly aware of all the differing languages that surrounded us and began to hear it all as music.
The music on this album is a celebration of that; the music in languages and the language in music, and a travel back in time remembering my childhood life in Rosenhill.
